2 Stage Harbor Freight Dust Collector Hack

2 Stage Harbor Freight Dust Collector Hack

Dust collection is such an important tool in a wood shop and it often gets overlooked as it is not a fun tool to spend the money on or to set up. I modified a single stage dust collector to include a cyclone and cartridge filter resulting in a DC system that rivals the much more expensive and powerful systems.

You can watch the video where I modify this Dust Collector below.

In this Learn the Logic series video I go through the parts that I used to make this system, some important dimensions and what I do and don’t like about the setup. If you would like to modify a system in a similar manner you can download the free basic set of plans below, a parts list is included in those plans.

  7. John Downing

Very creative. I am going to modify my “2-Stage” to this. I have metal cyclone that I got on Ebay years ago, and it isn’t doing that well and is too big.

  8. Bert Huurneman

    Great idea

  1. Tyler, seeing your 2 stage DC gave me inspiration to gather up the remaining pieces to do mine. I have been dragging around a 1.5hp unit for years and since moved into a new house with shop it was time to pull the trigger. Your cyclone and trash can mount influenced how I mounted mine. The biggest difference is mine is mounted outside the shop (for sound) and it vents to the outside so no filter. I love having a dedicated system. Keep the great videos coming.

    1. Andy, I’m living in a garage that has high dust content that can be seen via the security camera’s infrared. The dust is so dense that I hack in the morning and my lungs are showing signs of damage. Can you please send a link of how you made your dust disposer that is placed on the outside? A video would be great. My email address is kennyhendrick@yandex.com Thanks for any response you might avail.

  2. The 4″ pcv Sewer and Water pipe that you used in your dust collections system. I was trying to find at Menards and I think i found it but it looks like it is corrugated inside but that may just be the picture. Do you have the link for the stuff you used?

    Thank YOu

  3. Hey Tyler
Can I get a part number for filter. I want to know what filter u put on there and what size dust deputy did u use normal or XL.

    Thanks Tyler

  4. I have signed up for your newsletter so I can download your basic plans for this modification without success. The automated link does not seem to be working. Thanks for your videos. They are inspiring me to get my shop up and running after being away for awhile.

  5. I’ve been thinking about doing something like this, great video. I currently have a portable cyclonic separator but ended up needing a metal trash can to prevent collapse. I’m assuming it is from turbulent airflow in the flexible hose that runs to my machines. Have you had any plastic trash can collapse issues with the rigid collection hoses? (I have the same HF unit)

  6. Do you find that the 2 HP Harbor Freight is adequate for your collection needs? It looks like you have an involved dust collection network.
    Thanks

    1. Steve,

I am actually in the process of changing things up. I never had an issue at my old shop but the system does not seem to perform as well in the new space, not sure if it’s the duct layout or what. New stuff to come!

  7. I am on your site and can not find the plans for the dust collection system you created. if I’m not navigating your site please help me find it. You seem to have a very extensive detail oriented way of explaining things, kudos.

    Thank you

    Shannon

  8. Great video on your dust system. I would love to get a set of plans but I appear to be having some difficulty. Would you please help me with this? I will be building the same setup with the HF/Cyclone and trash can. Only difference is because of space I will vent outside my home. Keep up the good work. My next project will be very similar to your table saw off cut / workbench with table saw stand included.. I am a small 1/2 of a two car garage but it serves as my man ccae as I get older.

  10. Great job! And thanks for the plans. Would it be possible to direct the output of the cyclone through a wall to a bin outside the shop? Would I need to seal the outside bin or could it simply dump into it?

  11. Tyler, I’ve been thinking how I can reduce the footprint of the two stages and how I might install it higher on the wall to free up floor space. I saw one video where someone ran flexible tubing from the bottom of the cyclone to a trash can. The tubing allowed for easy removal of the can. That might solve your problem of trying to raise the can to the unit. Question: do you really need the green part of the Grizzly attached to the air filter (part with handle)? Since you have already taken care of the debri, I see no need. Could you not just run the exhaust tube to the air filter after placing a lid on the filter?

  12. Doesn’t mounting the motor vertically cause excessive pressure on the bearings for the motor. That motor shaft is designed to be resting horizontally. Mounting vertically will shorten the life of the motor considerably. Vertical failure could be a big “bang”. Just sayin..
